Metal injection molding can be traced back to the powder injection molding of ceramic spark plugs started in 1920s. During the following decades, powder injection molding was mainly focused on ceramic injection molding. It was until 1979 that Wiech other Parmatech products were awarded two awards, then Wiech Rivers were granted patents. Powdered injection molding began to shift to metal injection molding.
In the past, due to the lack of suitable powder raw materials, too high price, imperfect knowledge platform, immature technology, people's understanding market acceptance time, production (including mold manufacturing) cycle too long, insufficient investment other reasons, its development application were relatively slow.
In order to solve the difficulties of MIM technology promote the practicability of MIM technology, in the middle of 80s, a high-level powder worker plan was developed in the United States. The research contents covered 18 topics related to injection molding. Subsequently, Japan Germany also actively carried out research development of MIM.
In 1980, Wiech set up Witec company. In 1982, Brunswick entered the MIM industry bought Witec company. Later, it gradually registered Omark industry, Remington military products, Rocky dental subsidiary. In 1986, Nippon Seison of Japan introduced the Wiech process. In 1990, Israeli Metalor2000 company introduced Wiech process technology Parmatech company established MIM production line.
With the continuous development of MIM research the development of new binder, milling technology degreasing process, industrialization has been achieved by the beginning of 90s. After more than 20 years' efforts, MIM has become the most rapidly developing most promising new near net forming technology in the field of international powder metallurgy. It is known as "one of the most popular metal parts forming technologies in the world".
